Endoscopy

Endoscopy is a minimally invasive test commonly performed to track the digestive tract. The diagnostic procedure uses an instrument called endoscope which is a thin, flexible tube equiped with a camera and light. The camera obtains detailed imaging of the gastrointestinal tract upto the stomach, which helps in detecting any digestive malfunction.

Endoscope can also be provided with operating equipment to gather some tissues or cells from the concerned organ. Endoscopy can be of various types, but the most common types are:

  • Upper Endoscopy (OGD / Esophagogastroduodenoscopy) - esophagus, stomach, upper half of the body
  • Colonoscopy (colon, rectum)
  • Sigmoidoscopy (lower part of the colon)

Endoscopy helps in detecting any lumps, acid reflux, ulcers, tumors, gastritis, gastrointestinal bleeding, or celiac diseases. This dignostic procedure can also be used to remove any polyps, stop internal bleeding and dilate structures.
